These pieces of ceramics have belonged to tripod pipkins made of red clay. It was a common means of making food from 14th century to the beginning of 19th century. Pipkins were heated on open fire. The inner side of the tripod pipkins is glazed with reddish lead glazing. Tripod pipkins had no handle before the 15th century – they had ears instead. Local production of high quality redware goods began in Turku possibly already in the end of the 15th century; the first potter is mentioned in Turku in 1550s.
