Discovery of the Week 25

Pieces of limestone

The discovery of the week series presents pieces of limestone. Limestone appears naturally in very few areas in Finland. In Kimito (Kemiö) and Pargas (Parainen), limestone has possibly been quarried already in the Middle Ages. It was also imported to Finland from e.g. Estonia. Limestone was a significant element in medieval as well as later stone and brick building, for it could be burned into lime mortar.

Eric Leonardson: Other Music

Sunday 13th June 5 pm in Aula café.

Chicago-based composer, sound designer, instrument inventor and
improvisor Eric Leonardson plays Springboard, an electroacoustic
percussion instrument made by the artist himself. Applying his
percussion skills and a piezo pickup to coil springs, plastic combs,
rubber bands these rich enharmonic timbres "evoke the sound world of a
Balinese Gamelan orchestra..."

Leonardson´s creative sound work has been described as ritualic music
got from ordinary household objects.

Klangi, an exhibition on international sound art brings forth artists whose primary mode of narration is sound. The exhibition is the first in Finland to comprehensively study what, and how, an artist may present in their work and how the audience may experience through sounds. Klangi gives a new perspective to the relationship between sound and visual art, the essence of sound and the power of its expression. A work of sound art may be a sculpture, performance or something so minimalistic that the only visual element is a loudspeaker or headphones.

Not to be Framed

Not to be framed presents outsider and contemporary folk art from Finland and Europe. It is a kind of art that has been seen more and more in exhibitions over recent years. This art is challenging to define using traditional art terms, and it is not even necessary to find a terminology to cover it all. The artists and their works challenge the museum to ask itself questions that won't have exact answers: Should art be defined? What kind of artists are brought to view? What kind of art is considered as important?

Eight Swedish artists in a joint exhibition: Maria Bajt, Carin Ellberg, Jenny Granlund, Monica Höll, Sonja Larsson, Anne Thulin, Nanna de Wilde and Susanne Vollmer.

The artists in the exhibition Because of Me, I Draw the Line have in common the use of line in their work. Their lines are drawn and painted, they are cut, shaped from pantyhose or made with thick layers of paint. Life is made visible in the works by figurative, organic, geometrical and non-figurative lines.

Sound Ways

The Sound Ways exhibition concentrates on the soundscape of the Middle Ages. The exhibition offers six aural images of medieval times. Its aim is to recount history, moments experienced in history and the feelings that they awaken. 'Sound Ways' plucks from the past things that are then brought out through characters of the times. They are a blacksmith, a fisherman's wife, a teacher and his pupils at the Cathedral School, a little maid of a merchant's house, a young herdsman and the Mother Superior of a Brigittine convent. Two men, two women and two children.

DDR - Perspectives on East Germany

The German Democratic Republic, DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik), existed from 1949 to 1990. The state was created when the territory of Germany was divided between east and west, and was a consequence of the division of the occupied zones between the Allies in the wake of World War Two. Negotiations between the occupying forces concerning the future of Germany came to nothing, so the areas occupied by the Western nations were united into the Federal Republic of Germany, and the eastern area occupied by the Soviet Union became the DDR.

Two Collections: Ehrnrooth/Koivurinta

The exhibition is a dialogue between two collections of contemporary art. Both collections were begun through the interest of a private person in contemporary art. As the process of collecting has progressed, this interest has changed into passion and a comprehensive knowledge of art, as a result of which two extensive and significant art collections have been created.

The collections of the two collectors, who represent different generations, display common points of interest, but also trends and areas of emphasis that differ from each other.

This week´s discovery are flintstone pieces found in the summer excavations. Flintstone is a dense and hard stone whose color can vary from almost black to light. In Finland, there are no natural deposits of flintstone and so it has been brought here e.g. from Russia and from the southern parts of Scandinavia. In the course of time, flintstone found its way to Finland´s coasts as ballast in ships.
