St Anne’s Chapel

The ecumenical St Anne's Chapel, which is situated in the Aboa Vetus Museum, provides a unique setting for festive events.

St Anne's Chapel was consecrated in September 2001. St Anne, mother of the Virgin Mary and Jesus' grandmother, was the patron saint of merchants and widows. In medieval Turku, St Anne was a well respected and venerated saint, and, as a museum that researches and values medieval history, we wish to commemorate and honour the all-too-easily forgotten spiritual side of the Middle Ages.

The icon of St Anne located in the chapel was painted by Mirjam Laine, an icon artist from the eastern Finnish town of Kotka. The altar was designed by architects Frank Schauman and Ulla Reunanen. The chapel was consecrated by Archbishop Jukka Paarma, with the assistance of Archbishop Johannes, Head of the Finnish Orthodox Church, and Father Wieslaw Swiech of the Finnish Catholic Church.

As well as offering a cultural experience, St Anne's Chapel gives people the opportunity for spiritual refreshment. As well as a place to stop and reflect, St Anne's Chapel provides the possibility to conduct holy sacraments (Holy Communion and Baptism) and to perform marriage ceremonies. The chapel is also well suited to short devotional services.

In winter, the chapel is open during the normal opening hours of the museum, from Tuesday to Sunday, 11 am to 7 pm, and, in summer, every day from 11 am to 7 pm. Bookings can also be made at other times. During museum opening hours, there is a flat charge of €100/event for the use of the chapel, irrespective of the number of participants (does not include entrance charge for visitors to go elsewhere in the museum).
