Imaginative stories

5.2.-1.3.2009

This exhibition consists of paintings and stories made by 7th grade pupils of Samppalinna school. The works are based on the ideology of spontaneous and uncomplicated expression as presented in the art of the Cobra group. The Cobra group sought inspiration in the creativity of children. The themes of the art works are often connected to the ancient mythologies and folk tales of primitive peoples.

The pupils created their own fairytales and made them visible by painting. In the real Cobra spirit the restricting concepts of perspective, proportions and refined brush strokes have been thrown aside and the need for unhindered expression has been put first. The themes reflected in the stories are classical: the battle between good and bad, fables, stories of love and friendship, stories of evil mothers, feuds between brothers, trees that grow to reach the skies, supernatural powers, etc.
