IC-98 – A View from the Other Side
IC-98 opens a dreamy view to a parallel universe
The Takkahuone gallery in Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova Museum presents the Turku-based artist group IC-98’s exhibition, a digital animation called A View from the Other Side, which has a runtime of over sixty minutes.
A View from the Other Side combines fact and fiction to form a story across and beyond history. At the centre lies the Pinella portico, a familiar site for the people of Turku. The soundscape, an improvisation by the Turku Cathedral organist Markku Hietaharju, plays a significant part in portraying the atmosphere of the riverside. The animation in A View from the Other Side was realized by Markus Lepistö.
Currently functioning as restaurant Pinella, the Gylich portico was built in 1836 as a part of Nils Henrik Pinello’s plan for a park. This neoclassical column façade was built following the contemporary fashion to resemble a Greek stoa (a covered walkway). At the agoras, the market places of ancient Greece, a stoa could be entered by anyone. The building was not privately owned but functioned as a free venue for commerce and exchanging thoughts.
A View from the Other Side has previously been on display at the Forum Box Gallery in Helsinki in May 2011. During the summer of 2011 it could be seen at the courtyard of Turku main library through a carved peephole in a door.
IC-98 was founded in 1998. The group is interested in events that never occurred, fantastical connections between things, orthodox doctrines and heresies, history’s presence in today, structures of society and architecture as well as control mechanisms and how to liberate oneself from them. In addition to the Takkahuone gallery exhibition, the 2nd floor of Ars Nova hosts IC-98’s animation Theses on the Body Politic (Riket) from 2009. This work is part of the Art Collection of the Matti Koivurinta Foundation.
Together with the exhibition at Takkahuone, Iconoclast Publications publishes the work A View from the Other Side – Views which presents the series of illustrations based on the animated movie as seen at Forum Box.
